Watching a 400-pound sea turtle haul herself up the beach under a full moon, dig a

nest, and lay 100 eggs is already unforgettable. Watching your kids help release those hatchlings into the ocean the next morning? That’s the kind of memory that changes a child forever. Costa Rica is one of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting destinations and has plenty of family-friendly ways to turn a beach holiday into a meaningful conservation experience — guided night tours, hatchery work, baby-turtle releases, beach clean-ups, and educational programs that are perfect for kids as young as 4–6 (full volunteer patrols are usually 16+ or 18+ only, but day activities and guided experiences are open to families).
The money you spend on certified guides and lodges goes directly to local

conservation projects. Choose your coast and season wisely:
Caribbean coast (Tortuguero) – Green turtles July–October (peak August–September), some leatherbacks and hawksbills
Pacific coast – Leatherbacks December–April, Olive Ridley year-round with massive arribadas July–December (peak August–November)
Here are the two proven family-friendly conservation experiences plus a 10-day itinerary that lets you experience both coasts.
1. Tortuguero National Park – Caribbean Coast (July–October)
Accessible only by boat or small plane, Tortuguero feels like the end of the world in the best way. The village has no cars, the beach is wild, and the canals are full of monkeys, sloths, and birds. Guides from the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) or lodges lead night tours where kids learn to spot tracks, watch nesting turtles from a respectful distance, and sometimes help with hatchling releases.
Family-Friendly Lodges & Hotels
All include boat transfers from La Pavona / Caño Blanco, most meals, and tours.
Mawamba Lodge – big pool, kids’ playground area, family rooms, turtle tours included in many packages
Laguna Lodge Tortuguero – beautiful gardens, huge pool, butterfly garden, great kids love the frog pond at night
Tortuga Lodge & Gardens (by Costa Rica Expeditions) – upscale, excellent food, private balconies for wildlife spotting
Evergreen Lodge – good mid-range option with pool and family packages Typical price for family of 4 (2 nights all-inclusive + tours): $1,200–$2,200
Restaurant Suggestions in Tortuguero
Mostly lodge buffets (fresh fish, rice & beans, tropical fruit, kid-friendly chicken fingers/pasta always available)
Budda Café (in the village) – great pizza, smoothies, relaxed vibe
Miss Junie’s – legendary Caribbean-style rondón (coconut stew) – book ahead
Wild Ginger – fun fusion, great for picky eaters
Things to Do & What Not to Miss
Certified night turtle tour with STC or lodge guide (kids 6+ usually)
Morning canal boat or silent kayak tour – guaranteed wildlife sightings
Visit Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor Center – interactive exhibits, Junior Ranger-style booklet
Beach clean-ups organized by lodges (kids love collecting plastic)
Possible baby turtle release (August–October – pure magic)
What not to miss: A mother turtle covering her nest and returning to the sea at dawn – kids talk about it for years.
2. Pacific Coast Beaches – Leatherbacks & Olive Ridley Arribadas
Leatherback season (December–April) around Playa Grande / Tamarindo and Tamarindo area; Olive Ridley arribadas (July–December) around Ostional / Nosara.

The Leatherback Trust and local community groups run excellent educational programs and night tours. Some projects allow families to help with morning hatchery work and releases under supervision.
Family-Friendly Hotels (Playa Grande / Tamarindo area)
JW Marriott Guanacaste – incredible pools, kids club, 20 min to turtle beach
Hotel Bosque del Mar – beachfront, family suites, great breakfast
The Gilded Iguana (Nosara area, close to Ostional) – family rooms, pool, kids club
Restaurant Suggestions
Lola’s (Playa Guiones) – beachfront, amazing fish tacos, kids menu
Nogui’s (Tamarindo) – fresh ceviche, casual
La Sodita Costarricense (Ostional village) – authentic casado and sea views
Things to Do & What Not to Miss
Guided night turtle tour (Playa Grande or Ostional)
Morning hatchery visit / baby release
Surf or boogie board lessons (Tamarindo / Nosara)
Mangrove kayak tour or beach clean-up
What not to miss: An arribada if your dates line up – thousands of turtles coming ashore at once is mind-blowing.
10-Day Dual-Coast Family Itinerary (July–October for Green + Olive Ridley)
Day 1 – Arrive San José → overnight near airport (Hotel Bougainvillea or Adventure Inn) Day 2 – Transfer to Tortuguero (drive + boat) → check in lodge Day 3–5 – Tortuguero: 2–3 night turtle tours, canal tours, beach time Day 6 – Boat out + drive

to La Fortuna / Arenal (hot springs, hanging bridges, chocolate tour) Day 7–8 – Arenal area activities (zip-line, hot springs, wildlife hike) Day 9 – Drive to Tamarindo / Playa Grande area (4–5 hrs) Day 10 – Morning turtle hatchery visit or night tour + departure flight from Liberia airport
This itinerary works year-round; just shift the turtle coast for leatherback season (December–April).
Practical Tips for Families
Book turtle tours through your lodge or the Sea Turtle Conservancy – never go alone
Use only red flashlights on the beach (white light disorients turtles)
Bring bug spray, lightweight long sleeves/pants, closed-toe shoes for night walks
Kids under 6 may not be allowed on night tours – check in advance
Choose operators with STC or ADIO (Ostional community) certification
Pack reef-safe sunscreen and reusable water bottles – every little bit helps
A sea turtle volunteer vacation in Costa Rica teaches kids that they can make a real difference – and gives them stories (and photos) they’ll tell forever. Pura vida! 🐤
